Paul Stirling Resigns as Ireland T20I Captain, Retains ODI Role
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dublin, March 19 (NationPress) Veteran cricketer Paul Stirling has announced his resignation from the role of Ireland's T20I captain as the team gears up for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup in 2028. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old will retain his position as captain for the ODI format.
Stirling was appointed as the captain for both ODI and T20I formats in October 2023, leading Ireland during the recently concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
In the tournament hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Ireland was placed in Group B, finishing fourth out of five teams with a total of three points. The team secured only one win and faced two defeats during the group stage, with one match being abandoned due to weather.
This change in leadership will result in Ireland Men having a dedicated captain for each format of the game. Andrew Balbirnie will continue to lead in Test matches, while Stirling will focus on ODIs, with a new T20I captain to be announced in due course.
“It has been an incredible privilege to lead Ireland in this format, and I take immense pride in that role. Captaining your country comes with significant responsibility, and I am grateful for the trust and support I’ve received throughout my tenure,” Stirling stated in an official announcement on Thursday.
“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the coaching staff, the extended support team, and everyone connected with Cricket Ireland for their unwavering support during my captaincy. I also deeply appreciate the backing from fans who passionately follow our team wherever we compete.”
“Although I am stepping down from the T20 captaincy, my commitment to the Ireland team remains steadfast as I continue in my role as ODI captain,” he added.
Stirling participated in just two matches during the T20 World Cup 2026 before sustaining a knee ligament injury in a match against Australia, which ended his tournament participation. Wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker took over the leadership in Stirling's absence for the remainder of the event.
