London, Nov 15 (NationPress) The UK Environment Agency issued a warning on Saturday indicating that although weather conditions have stabilized, the risk of ongoing river flooding remains a concern following Storm Claudia.
The substantial rainfall linked to Storm Claudia has caused extensive disruptions, and the flood risk is still present across various regions in England. The agency noted that river flooding impacts are expected to persist today, with residual minor flooding on some larger rivers likely continuing until Tuesday.
While the Met Office's rain and wind warnings have now lapsed, approximately 58 flood warnings and 150 flood alerts were in effect on Saturday around noon, UK time.
The Environment Agency reported that 20 properties have sustained flooding due to Storm Claudia, including some in Cumbria affected by prior rainfall. More than 12,000 properties have been safeguarded by flood defenses and interventions from the Environment Agency.
Officials are actively working on-site to clear debris from trash screens, inspect assets, and set up temporary defenses as needed.
“Our thoughts are with those who have unfortunately faced flooding in recent days. While the number of affected homes is relatively small, the impact is devastating for those involved, and our teams are committed to assisting communities. After heavy rainfall, it can take several days for river levels to recede and surface water to clear. Minor impacts are likely across many regions in England, and our teams are on the ground managing flood defenses, checking assets, and supporting local authorities,” stated Joe Cuthbertson, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency.
In a related development, the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident in South Wales early Saturday morning due to severe flooding affecting the town and surrounding areas.
They activated the alert in Monmouth at 1:30 am, reporting that fire and rescue teams are collaborating with police, ambulance services, and other emergency support throughout the night and into the day.
Rescue operations, evacuations, welfare checks, and relocating residents from impacted areas to safety are ongoing, the agency reported. However, challenging conditions persist because of swift water flows, blocked routes, and continued strain on local infrastructure.
Area Manager Matt Jones described the flooding as “significant.” The incident transpired following Storm Claudia, with reports from local media indicating that additional rain and flooding are anticipated across Britain and Ireland.
