Executive producer Sudip Sharma — the creative force behind acclaimed cop dramas such as Paatal Lok and Kohraa — has spoken candidly about what drew him to Babita Singh Reporting, the investigative drama that released worldwide on 28 August. According to Sharma, the series stands apart not because its protagonist is a female officer, but because it is fundamentally a story about a woman learning to listen to herself.

What Set the Script Apart

Sharma was unequivocal about the quality of the writing. 'It was a very well-written script, which is rare to find. The script was like gold, something so good coming from Amita Vyas,' he said. He credited writer Amita Vyas with crafting a character whose complexity goes well beyond the procedural genre.

'While it is about a female cop, more importantly, it is about her as a person and as an individual. Babita has so many roles in her life — she is a wife and a daughter-in-law, and she has always put those roles ahead of her own professional ambitions and goals, choosing to think about herself later,' Sharma explained.

The Core of Babita's Journey

For Sharma, the emotional heart of the series lies in incremental self-realisation. 'What I found beautiful about her journey was watching her take that first step towards listening to herself and making decisions based on what she believes is right, irrespective of what others think,' he said. 'These may seem like small steps, but they are incredibly important because, with each one, she moves closer to understanding herself.'

He described the dual arc of the narrative — the external investigation and the internal reckoning — as the element that made the project compelling. 'That balance between wanting to find the truth and, in the process, finding yourself was what I found so powerful and beautiful about the story,' he added.

The Story and Cast

Directed by Ambiecka Pandit and written by Amita Vyas, Babita Singh Reporting follows suspended police officer Babita, known as Baby and portrayed by Nimisha Sajayan. Her search for answers after the murder of her childhood friend becomes an unexpected journey of self-discovery. The series also stars Barun Sobti and Anshumaan Pushkar in pivotal roles.

The project is produced by Saurabh Malhotra, Manuj Mittra, and Tina Tharwani under the banner of Film Squad Productions, in association with Act Three, with Sudip Sharma serving as executive producer.
