New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) In order to fulfill the UN-endorsed Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), it is essential that the education on sustainability starts at the school level, asserted Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, on Saturday.
While speaking to IANS during the grand finale of the second edition of the 'Ideas to Impact' (i2I) Challenge held at the institute, Kamakoti emphasized the importance of introducing sustainability concepts to children as young as 5 years old.
“When I engage with schools, I always highlight that children should begin learning about sustainability from the age of 5, as it is exceedingly crucial,” stated the Director.
“Our planet is genuinely endangered, and we must closely examine our resource usage, lifestyle choices, and habits. If we do not take action, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will be exceedingly challenging. Therefore, we must initiate sustainability education at the school level,” he added.
He pointed out that sustainability principles are integral to all sectors, making it vital to implement them through education, technology, and start-ups.
During the i2I Challenge on the IIT Madras campus, 38 eco-innovations developed by young innovators from across India were presented. Each project was designed to promote sustainability, the circular economy, and climate resilience.
“We have 38 teams from all corners of India, including Jammu, each presenting outstanding projects specifically aimed at addressing sustainable development goals,” Kamakoti informed.
“The United Nations has outlined 17 sustainable development goals, and participants here are tackling nearly seven or eight of these objectives. They have developed products that could effectively turn waste materials or natural energy into reusable resources,” the Director told IANS.
“Globally, every nation is committed to the sustainable development goals. With a population of 1.5 billion, being a vast democracy, technology is our only path to achieving these goals. Thus, promoting technology is of utmost importance,” he concluded.
