Hyderabad, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Telangana Assembly, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, is set to announce decisions on the disqualification petitions concerning five of the ten BRS MLAs later today. These MLAs are accused of switching their allegiance to the ruling Congress party.

The announcement will take place in an open court at 3:30 p.m. regarding the disqualification of Tellam Venkat Rao, Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy, T. Prakash Goud, Gudem Mahipal Reddy, and Arekapudi Gandhi.

Previously, the Speaker had concluded the hearings on the disqualification petitions of eight MLAs who reportedly defected from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to the ruling party.

Other MLAs involved in the hearings include Kale Yadaiah, Sanjay Kumar, and Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, with the Speaker reserving orders on all petitions.

Meanwhile, two MLAs, Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari, requested additional time to respond to a notice from the Speaker last month, marking the third issuance of such notices due to previous non-responsiveness.

The BRS has filed disqualification petitions against ten MLAs who were elected on the BRS ticket in the 2023 elections but switched allegiance to Congress in 2024.

While the BRS asserts that these MLAs have openly joined Congress and occupied treasury benches in the Assembly, the MLAs refute these claims, arguing that they only met with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss funding for their constituencies.

The BRS highlighted to the Speaker that Nagender not only joined Congress but also contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad on a Congress ticket. Furthermore, Srihari allegedly campaigned for his daughter, Kadiyam Kaviya, who ran for the Lok Sabha from Warangal as a Congress candidate.

On November 17, the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to the Telangana Speaker for failing to comply with its directive to resolve disqualification requests concerning the ten MLAs.

On July 31, a bench led by then Chief Justice B.R. Gavai instructed the Assembly Speaker to reach a decision on the disqualification issues within three months, labeling the non-compliance as grave contempt.

Point of View

It's essential to observe how political maneuverings affect democratic processes. The disqualification of MLAs can shake the foundations of party loyalty and governance, highlighting the need for accountability in political representation. The ongoing situation in Telangana serves as a reminder of the broader implications of political allegiance and its impact on elected officials' responsibilities.
