Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 22 (NationPress) By sharing footage of the dialogue between U.S. President Donald Trump and New York’s Mayor-designate Zohran Mamdani, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has reignited discussions within political spheres, subtly advocating for India to adopt a spirit of cooperation post-elections among its political adversaries.
In a post on his social media platform, Tharoor stated: “This is how democracy should function. Engage vigorously for your viewpoints during elections, with no holds barred in rhetoric. However, once the election concludes and the electorate has made their choice, it is essential to collaborate for the collective good of the nation you are both committed to serve. I aspire to witness more of this in India -- and I am endeavoring to contribute my part.”
Tharoor's comments seem to echo his earlier contentious remark where he commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech, despite Modi having criticized Congress at that time.
Previously, Tharoor contended that honoring the office of the Prime Minister and recognizing positives, even when in opposition, constitutes a “mature democratic perspective.”
While his views have caused unease among certain factions of Congress, they have also garnered appreciation from others for fostering political civility.
Tharoor’s remarks come after a widely circulated video of Trump and Mamdani, an Indian-origin mayor-designate of New York, engaged in a friendly exchange at the White House.
Post-meeting, Trump extolled Mamdani, expressing confidence that he would be “a very good mayor of New York,” adding that he would be pleased to reside in the city during Mamdani’s tenure.
Trump noted that many of his supporters also backed Mamdani, asserting that “Mamdani could surprise critics.”
In response, Mamdani expressed his dedication to collaborating with the White House to enhance life quality in New York and tackle significant urban challenges.
Tharoor leveraged this interaction to bolster his call for political collaboration, emphasizing that democracy flourishes when opponents can unite on issues of public significance.
His comments have reignited debates regarding the potential for bipartisanship within India’s increasingly divided political environment.
Meanwhile, veteran Congress leader and CWC member Ramesh Chennithala opted not to comment on Tharoor's statements.
