Virudhunagar, April 20 (NationPress) The number of fatalities has now reached 25 following the catastrophic explosion at a firecracker production facility in Kattanarpatti, located near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, as confirmed by officials on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday at the Vanaja Firecracker Factory, which is owned by Muthu Manickam from Govindanallur and was functioning under a legitimate Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) license.
Initial reports indicate that over 30 employees were present in the factory at the time of the explosion, involved in routine firecracker manufacturing processes.
Authorities disclosed that the blast was likely caused by friction during production, resulting in an abrupt ignition of explosive substances. The force of the explosion was so severe that it completely obliterated at least four rooms of the factory. The sound was reportedly audible up to 10 kilometers away, highlighting the explosion's intensity.
On Sunday, responders retrieved 23 charred bodies from the site.
Currently, over 12 individuals are receiving treatment at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital; unfortunately, two women succumbed to their injuries on Monday morning despite receiving medical attention. The deceased have been identified as Panchavarnam and Pechiammal.
As a result, the total death toll has escalated to 25.
Following a complaint from Vanitha, the administrative officer of the Kattanarpatti facility, the Vachakarapatti police have initiated legal action against Easwari and her spouse, Muthumanickam, under four different legal provisions.
Four specialized police teams have been established to locate the couple, who are currently on the run. With the death toll at 25, 21 bodies have been positively identified, and post-mortem examinations have been completed for these individuals. The identification process for the remaining four bodies is ongoing.
Moreover, after the post-mortem examinations, the relatives of the deceased have refused to accept the bodies, demanding that the management provide the promised compensation of Rs 5 lakhs in the form of a Demand Draft (DD) instead of a cheque.
In light of the circumstances, over 50 police personnel have been deployed to the site to ensure security.
