Is the Trial Against Sandip Ghosh in the RG Kar Financial Irregularities Case Stalled?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 16 (NationPress) The trial against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-operated R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, related to his alleged role in the multi-crore R. G. Kar financial irregularities case, could not commence at a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Monday.
Despite the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitting its initial chargesheet in the case at the special PMLA court on February 6, the trial against Ghosh was stalled due to the absence of the necessary state sanction for prosecution, as he is a state government employee.
The next hearing date at the special PMLA court is set for March 7.
In the chargesheet filed by the ED, Ghosh is identified as the mastermind behind the financial irregularities case.
Additionally, the ED has named two private vendors, Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra, as co-accused beneficiaries.
The agency Hazra Medical, which provides medicines and medical equipment to R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, has also been implicated in the chargesheet.
While the ED investigates the financial irregularities, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting concurrent investigations into both the financial misconduct and the rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital's premises in August 2024.
The CBI is delving into a potential broader conspiracy surrounding the rape and murder.
Concerns have been raised that the rape and murder case may be interconnected with the financial irregularities at R. G. Kar.
Key allegations in the financial irregularities case include purported manipulation of the tendering process, awarding infrastructure contracts to private firms while bypassing the state Public Works Department, and the illegal sale of organs from unidentified bodies intended for autopsy.
