Washington, Jan 28 (NationPress) A potential visit to the White House for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the several topics addressed during his phone conversation with President Donald Trump.

The White House released a statement indicating that they also talked about security in the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, and Europe, as well as the Quad (a coalition formed by India, the US, Japan, and Australia) during their call on Monday.

The statement highlighted Trump’s insistence on India increasing its acquisition of security gear from the US and fostering a fair bilateral trade relationship.

Earlier, PM Modi expressed on X that he had spoken to his “dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS.”

He congratulated Trump on his significant second term, stating, “We are dedicated to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. Together, we will work for the welfare of our citizens and promote global peace, prosperity, and security.”

A few hours later, the White House affirmed that Trump and Modi had a “productive call.”

“The two leaders explored avenues for expanding and deepening collaboration, discussing various regional matters, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. The President highlighted the necessity for India to increase its purchase of American-made security equipment and advance towards a fairer bilateral trade relationship,” the statement noted.

Moreover, it added: “The leaders touched upon plans for Prime Minister Modi's visit to the White House, underlining the robust friendship and strategic bonds between our countries. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to advancing the U.S.-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India set to host Quad Leaders for the first time later this year.”

Reports suggest that officials from both nations are discussing a potential White House visit for PM Modi in February, although no official announcements have been made yet. The Monday statement implies that a visit is forthcoming but lacks specifics.

The two leaders are expected to meet in person later this year, likely during President Trump’s visit to India for a Quad summit. This call marked their second conversation since Trump’s re-election; their first took place shortly after his election win in November 2024.

The relationship between the two leaders has been notably close since Trump’s initial term from 2017 to 2021. The US president notably addressed a rally for Modi in Houston in 2019, dubbed the “Howdy Modi” rally, and later visited India in February 2020 for a “Namaste Trump” event in Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented Modi at Trump’s inauguration last week and participated in related events, including a prayer service attended by the Trump family, cabinet members, and prominent US tech leaders such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Sundar Pichai. Jaishankar also became Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s first foreign guest for a bilateral meeting at the State Department after a gathering of Quad foreign ministers, alongside Penny Wong from Australia and Iwaya Takeshi from Japan.
