This marks the second telephonic interaction between the two leaders following President Trump’s re-election, with the first occurring shortly after his victory in November.

Both leaders have maintained a strong personal rapport since President Trump’s initial term from 2017 to 2021.

The U.S. President co-hosted a rally for Prime Minister Modi in Houston in 2019, known as the 'Howdy Modi' event, and subsequently visited India in February 2020 for a 'Namaste Trump' event in PM Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

A personal meeting between the two leaders is anticipated this year. Reports indicate that officials from both nations are working to schedule a meeting in February, although no announcements have been made yet.

They are expected to meet during President Trump’s visit to India for a summit of the Quad nations, which India is set to host this year.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented the Prime Minister at Trump’s inauguration last week and participated in related events, including a prayer service attended by the Trump family, cabinet members, and U.S. technology leaders like Elon Musk of Tesla, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Sundar Pichai of Google.

Jaishankar was also the first foreign guest for a bilateral meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department, following another Quad foreign ministers' meeting that included Australia’s Penny Wong and Japan’s Iwaya Takeshi.
