The two leaders convened for their first discussion following President Trump's inauguration for a second non-consecutive term, displaying notable warmth, camaraderie, and familiarity while emphasizing their close relationship and how they plan to strengthen India-US connections.
"You've made an immense personal contribution towards enhancing our relations, making them more comprehensive, and achieving unprecedented heights in our partnership," Prime Minister Modi remarked through a translator, acknowledging the advancements made during the President's first term.
"I have a firm belief that during your second term, we will work with even greater speed."
The Prime Minister highlighted that the President prioritizes India's national interests, similar to his own approach.
"One aspect I deeply admire, which I learned from President Trump, is his commitment to keeping the national interest paramount. Like him, I too place the national interest of India above all else."
President Trump subsequently outlined the agenda for their discussions, clearly showcasing his enthusiasm to advance America's national interests during his conversations with the Prime Minister.
"They will be acquiring a substantial amount of our oil and gas. We possess more oil and gas than any other nation in the world, and they require it, and we are ready to supply. We'll discuss trade and various other topics, but it is truly an honor to see you, and you have been my friend for a long time," Trump stated.
Senior officials from the Trump administration informed reporters prior to the meeting that both sides aim to resume negotiations on a trade agreement with hopes of finalizing it by 2025.
"I am thrilled to see you back in the White House. I convey my congratulations on behalf of 1.4 billion people of India... The citizens of India entrusted me with the opportunity to serve as Prime Minister for a third term... In this tenure, I have the privilege of collaborating with President Trump once more for the next four years, and it is truly a delight... Based on my previous experience working with you during your first term, we will continue to promote the India-US strategic partnership with the same bond, trust, and excitement," PM Modi expressed.
The Prime Minister reminisced about the 'Howdy Modi' and 'Namaste Trump' events.
"I am pleased that upon entering this room, my friend reminded me of Ahmedabad and the cricket stadium where we hosted a significant rally, and the events we conducted in Ahmedabad 'Namaste Trump' and 'Howdy Modi' in Houston... The resonance of those events can still be heard today in India and around the world," he said.
