Washington, Nov 7 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump announced his intentions to visit India in the near future, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “great man” and a “friend.”
During a press briefing at the White House on Thursday, Trump remarked that the trade discussions with India are progressing “very well.”
“He’s a friend of mine, and we communicate frequently. He wants me to visit, and we’ll work out the details. I’ll definitely be going… He’s a great man,”
Trump stated.
When inquired about the possibility of traveling to India next year, Trump responded, “It could be, yes.” He reminisced about his previous trip to India in 2020, expressing, “I had an amazing experience there with the Prime Minister.”
Additionally, he mentioned that India has “largely ceased purchasing oil from Russia.”
Trump’s remarks follow a statement from the White House indicating that he holds great esteem for Prime Minister Modi and that the two leaders maintain “pretty frequent” communication.
The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, emphasized on Tuesday that Trump “feels very positive and strongly” about the relationship between the US and India.
“The President has immense respect for Prime Minister Modi, and they converse quite often,”
she added.
Regarding the trade negotiations, Leavitt disclosed that Trump and his administration are engaged in “serious discussions” with India.
“The President and his trade team are in very serious discussions with India regarding this matter,”
she noted.
She also pointed to the recent Diwali celebration held at the White House and the appointment of Sergio Gor as the next US Ambassador as signs of the President’s dedication to strengthening ties with India.
“Just a few weeks ago, he had a direct conversation with Prime Minister Modi during the Diwali celebration in the Oval Office, alongside numerous esteemed Indian American officials. We are fortunate to have a wonderful US Ambassador to India in Mr. Sergio Gor, who will represent our country admirably,”
she remarked.
On October 21, Trump hosted a special Diwali event at the White House, where he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a remarkable individual” and expressed his affection for “the people of India.”
