Washington, Sep 12 (NationPress) - On Friday, US President Donald Trump remarked that implementing a 50 percent tariff on India for purchasing oil from Russia was not an easy decision and deemed it a significant issue.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Trump elaborated that his choice to impose these punitive tariffs has resulted in a strain in relations with India.
“India was their biggest customer. I imposed a 50 percent tariff on India due to their oil purchases from Russia. That’s not something that comes easily. It’s a substantial issue, and it definitely causes a rift with India,” Trump stated.
His comments regarding India were made during a discussion concerning potential actions against Russia for its ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump also declared that he plans to target Russia “very hard” with economic sanctions, including tariffs.
“We will be applying strong sanctions on banks and other sectors, particularly oil and tariffs as well,” Trump announced.
The Trump administration is currently engaging in talks with European leaders to consider imposing 100 percent tariffs on both India and China.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent conveyed in a statement to Reuters that the EU should collaborate with the US to impose substantial tariffs that could be lifted once the war concludes.
Sergio Gor, Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India, referred to New Delhi as a “strategic partner” during his Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday, pledging to enhance defense and economic connections.
On the topic of Russian oil, Gor highlighted that encouraging India to reduce its dependence on Russian oil is a top priority for the Trump administration.
Gor also indicated that India and the US are nearing a trade agreement.
“We are actively engaged in negotiations with India right now. In fact, the President has invited their commerce and trade ministers to visit us next week, and he will be meeting with Ambassador Greer here in Washington. This could potentially lead to a deal. We are not far apart at all; the negotiations are focused on the finer details,” he said.
Last week, Trump announced the resumption of trade talks with India.
“I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are advancing negotiations to tackle the trade barriers between our two nations,” he shared on Truth Social.
Trump also characterized Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” and expressed eagerness to converse with him in the forthcoming weeks.
In response to Trump’s comments, PM Modi took to X, reinforcing the strength of the India-US alliance and expressing optimism about the current trade discussions.
“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will unlock the immense potential of the India-US partnership,” PM Modi stated.
