TVK govt to defend Tamil Nadu's rights, maintain Centre ties: CM Vijay
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday, 23 June declared that the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led state government would firmly protect Tamil Nadu's rights and interests while sustaining a constructive relationship with the Union government. Speaking in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor's Address, Vijay said development and welfare of all sections of society remained the administration's top priorities.
On Governance and Accountability
Vijay reaffirmed his government's commitment to building a transparent, corruption-free administration focused on the people. He emphasised that the government was advancing steadily toward good governance, accountability, and welfare — particularly for women.
'Our objective is to create a transparent administration and ensure the safety and welfare of women. We are moving towards these goals step by step,' he said.
The Chief Minister also pledged to ensure transparency in public tenders, protect government revenues, curb the drug menace, and generate employment through fair and accountable processes.
Sharp Attack on the Previous Government
Without naming the opposition directly, Vijay launched a pointed critique of the previous administration — widely understood to be a reference to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government — accusing it of financial mismanagement, corruption, and misuse of public resources. He rejected suggestions that his administration lacked governance experience, asserting that his government knew how to work for the people but not how to misuse public funds.
This comes amid an ongoing political contest in Tamil Nadu, where the TVK — a relatively new entrant to electoral politics — has had to defend its administrative credentials against a well-entrenched opposition.
Centre-State Relations: Ideological Opposition, Not Constant Conflict
Addressing the sensitive question of Centre-State relations, Vijay restated the TVK's ideological position of 'federalism at the Centre and autonomy for the States.' He made clear that while the TVK remained politically opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), that opposition should not translate into perpetual confrontation with the Union government.
'We are ideologically opposed to the BJP. However, that does not mean we should be in conflict with the Union government on every issue. Tamil Nadu's development is our priority. At the same time, we will never compromise on the State's rights or policy principles,' Vijay said.
Notably, this is a calibrated position — one that seeks to distinguish between opposing the BJP as a party and obstructing the Centre as a governing institution. It signals a pragmatic approach to federal relations even as political rivalries remain sharp.
Allegiance to the People, Not Any Political Camp
Vijay dismissed allegations that the TVK government was aligned with any particular political camp, stating that its guiding principles were secularism and social justice. He maintained that the government had consistently defended Tamil Nadu's interests on issues of federal rights and resource allocation.
'Those who attempt to create confusion on matters relating to State rights will ultimately be rejected by the people. We do not belong to any team. We belong only to the people,' he said.
With Tamil Nadu's political landscape in flux following the TVK's rise, Vijay's speech signals that his government intends to chart an independent course — defending state autonomy without sacrificing the developmental benefits of a working relationship with New Delhi.
