Why Are the Compositions of Today’s Music Not Resonating, Wonders Uttam Singh?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 14 (NationPress) Music composer Uttam Singh, celebrated for his work on ‘Gadar’, has expressed his views on why contemporary music is struggling to resonate.
In an interview with IANS, he pointed out that today’s music lacks melody, which he believes is essential for any memorable song.
Singh remarked, “Old melodies continue to thrive. Despite the success of modern films, there’s a tendency to rely on classic songs. This is fundamentally misguided. We’re not hearing new creations because they lack depth, melody, musicality, and meaningful lyrics. As a result, these songs may get a moment in the spotlight but quickly fade away.”
He elaborated, “The classic tracks that have stood the test of time are being reused, particularly evident in ‘Gadar 2’. The craft of songwriting is akin to cultivating land; it is a challenging endeavor. Once the land is established, you can choose how to develop it, whether as a garden, a mansion, or farmland. But the essence of a song is that foundational land, a significant achievement in itself.”
Previously, he reflected on the late legendary singer, stating, “I have always regarded Lata ji as Goddess Saraswati. We revere Saraswati in the arts, and Lata ji embodied her spirit during her lifetime. My collaboration with her spans nearly 40 years from when I began my musical journey around 1965-1966.”
“I had the privilege of arranging numerous songs with her. There was a time when every producer, director, music director, writer, camera operator, actress, and actor yearned for Lata ji's voice in their films,” he concluded.
