Is Kerala’s CM Vijayan Right to Worry About the Hasty Implementation of SIR?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (NationPress) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed deep concerns regarding the swift execution of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which is currently being implemented across 12 states and Union Territories without sufficient dialogue with political entities.
In a statement to the press following the routine Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister revealed that the state Cabinet has resolved to hold an all-party discussion on November 5 at 4 p.m. to address the matter and determine the subsequent steps.
"It is crucial for the voter list revision process to be transparent, inclusive, and to gain the trust of all involved parties," Vijayan remarked.
This declaration comes on the heels of similar concerns previously raised by him regarding procedural issues in the way the Election Commission is managing the voter roll revision across various states, including Kerala.
He stressed the importance of broader consultations to avert administrative mistakes and bolster public trust in the process.
The Chief Minister noted that the state government has received feedback from multiple political parties expressing their discontent with the speed and timing of the revision initiative, which is part of the nationwide summary revision of electoral rolls.
These parties contended that the SIR process is being expedited without adequate groundwork at the grassroots level.
Vijayan assured that the state government would promptly communicate Kerala's concerns to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and advocate for fairness, precision, and ample preparation time prior to finalizing the updated voter rolls.
Political analysts interpret the decision to convene an all-party meeting as a strategy by the state government to build a bipartisan accord on the electoral roll update, a delicate procedure that significantly influences election integrity.
Earlier on Wednesday, when the Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar gathered party leaders, all but the BJP voiced opposition to the SIR announcement.
