Vinay Prasad Resigns as FDA Vaccine Approval Director Amid Controversies
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New York, March 8 (NationPress) Vinay Prasad, an Indian-American scientist responsible for the approval of vaccines and new therapies, is resigning amidst controversies regarding his efforts to impose stricter regulations. His resignation marks the second time this year that he has stepped down from the role of director at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, as announced by the agency’s head, Marty Makary, on Friday.
Prasad's first resignation occurred in July, shortly after he took on the role, due to backlash from far-right critics regarding his previous support for Democrats. However, he was reinstated in August by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who shared some skepticism towards the medical establishment and pharmaceutical industry.
Makary noted on X that Prasad, who achieved significant milestones during his tenure, will be returning to the University of California, San Francisco, where he serves as a professor. “His center achieved a record number of medication approvals under his leadership,” he remarked.
While he eased some trial requirements for therapies, such as allowing only one major study instead of two, his demands for specific trial types led to tensions with pharmaceutical companies.
A notable confrontation occurred with Moderna, where he blocked its application for a flu vaccine due to concerns over its trials. The pharmaceutical giant and others countered his decision, resulting in Makary overruling Prasad.
Another issue arose when he denied an application from UniQure for a Huntington’s Disease treatment, an illness impacting the brain.
During his time in academia, he criticized various regulations and procedures implemented by the administration of former President Joe Biden during the COVID pandemic, which caught the attention of Kennedy.
