Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Visakhapatnam, on December 15, a Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) convicted two additional individuals in the espionage case associated with Pakistan involving the Visakhapatnam Navy.
The individuals found guilty are Somnath Sanjay Ikade from Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district and Sonu Kumar hailing from Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh.
They were apprehended in December 2019 in Karwar (Karnataka) and Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), respectively.
The NIA has detailed that both received a sentence of five years, 11 months, and 15 days of Simple Imprisonment (SI) under Section 18 of the UA(P) Act and Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act.
Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each, with the stipulation that failure to pay would result in an extra year of simple imprisonment.
This recent ruling increases the total convictions in this case to 10.
Ongoing trials are still in progress for the remaining five individuals apprehended by the NIA.
Last month, the court had also sentenced Kalavalapalli Konda Babu of Visakhapatnam and Aviansh Somal from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh to five years and 10 months of simple imprisonment each, under the same legal provisions.
The NIA noted that these two were arrested in December 2019 from Mumbai and Karwar.
Investigations have indicated that they maintained contact with foreign intelligence agents through social media and messaging applications, sharing sensitive information about India's defense infrastructure.
The case, transferred to the NIA from the Andhra Pradesh Police's Intelligence Department in December 2019, concerns espionage activities aimed at critical installations and Indian Navy facilities by foreign agents.
In June 2020, the NIA filed charges against 14 individuals, followed by an additional charge sheet for another accused in March 2021.
Investigations are still ongoing as part of the NIA's mission to uncover the broader conspiracy intended to undermine India's unity, integrity, security, and sovereignty.
