Wadettiwar Critiques Governor's Address as Empty Rhetoric
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 25 (NationPress) Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar launched a fierce critique of the Maharashtra government on Wednesday, labeling the Governor’s address as a mere “repetitive recitation of outdated points” and a “market of empty rhetoric.”
Leading the Congress party's opposition efforts in the Legislative Assembly, Wadettiwar accused the Mahayuti government of compelling the Governor to present “outright falsehoods” to the legislative body.
He claimed that despite frequently invoking the names of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for political gain, the government consistently undermined their principles through its actions.
“This administration has bestowed Padma awards upon individuals who have insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Savitribai Phule while Dr. Ambedkar championed equality. Current ministers are instead inciting communal discord, shattering Maharashtra's social fabric,” he asserted.
Wadettiwar further questioned the government's economic forecasts, particularly the transition from its 2024 objectives to the 'Vision 2047' initiative.
He pointed out that the administration had initially promised a $1 trillion economy by 2024. “They’ve abandoned the $1 trillion commitment and are now discussing a $5 trillion economy. Is it reasonable to project 2047 in 2026 without demonstrating progress on current goals?” he challenged, dismissing the figures as “mere inflation.”
Noting the troubling state of education in Maharashtra, with 2,200 schools lacking teachers and the closure of Marathi-medium institutions, he suggested reallocating Rs 2,000 crore from the Rs 14,000 crore earmarked for the Kumbh Mela to education.
He ridiculed the talk of a $5 trillion economy, stating that the state cannot even afford to repair ambulances.
Wadettiwar made serious allegations regarding “commission-driven” governance, claiming that contracts for school supplies were being awarded to pharmaceutical companies to benefit their associates. He accused the government of transferring wildlife habitat land in the Tadoba Tiger Reserve and Nagpur Forest Division to industrialists.
“While they profess to plant 10 crore trees, they are actually clearing forests and selling the state’s air, water, and land,” he alleged.
The Congress leader criticized the government’s handling of the agrarian crisis, lamenting that farmers in Yavatmal and Amravati are resorting to drastic measures to settle debts, yet the Governor’s address neglected to mention “debt-free farmers” (Karjamukti). He dismissed the MoUs signed at the World Economic Forum in Davos as “exaggerated claims.”
He questioned the rationale of traveling to Davos to secure agreements with Indian and Maharashtrian firms and called for a White Paper detailing the actual employment generated from these international engagements.
