Mumbai, July 8 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik announced on Tuesday that efforts are currently in progress to construct a wall on all four sides of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to deter leopards from encroaching on human habitats.
In response to a query from Shiv Sena UBT legislator Milind Narvekar, Minister Naik stated that various initiatives are being implemented to safeguard the residents of Sanjay Gandhi National Park from potential leopard attacks.
Additionally, plans are underway to relocate local residents by constructing homes in the Aarey area, situated outside the national park, through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.
According to Minister Naik, there are currently 54 leopards residing in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with a sufficient population of prey. To support smaller wildlife, an ample number of fruit trees are being planted. Furthermore, CCTV cameras have been installed within the park to monitor wildlife movements, and satellite assistance is also being considered. Continuous monitoring is conducted through dedicated patrol teams.
The Minister noted that there have been three fatalities due to leopard attacks in recent years, and each affected family has received Rs 20 lakhs in assistance.
Efforts are also being made to raise awareness via government and social organizations about the importance of not leaving children unattended.
Additionally, the minister mentioned that there are currently 22 leopards receiving treatment at the leopard health check-up center.
Meanwhile, in a separate inquiry, Ashish Jaiswal, the Minister of State for Agriculture, assured the council that farmers will not be left without compensation for crop damages even if they have not purchased crop insurance.
In response to BJP member Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil, Jaiswal explained that compensation is provided under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana through both Central and State Governments. He emphasized that government assistance will be available in cases of loss, rather than solely relying on insurance companies. This is the official stance of the government, ensuring farmers are supported regardless of their insurance status.
Minister Jaiswal also mentioned that farmers in the Solapur district have received compensation for prior crop insurance losses. An additional compensation amount of Rs 81.80 crore has been approved for the remaining 69,954 insurance claims, which will be disbursed by the Finance Department within the next three to four days.
