Chennai, July 21 (NationPress) In an effort to safeguard and elevate one of Tamil Nadu’s most cherished traditional rice varieties, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), an autonomous organization under the Higher Education Department, has submitted a request for a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Mugavai Kuliyadichan Sivappu Arisi (Mugavai Kuliyadichan Red Rice).
This application was filed in collaboration with the Geographical Indications Registry by TNSCST and the Sethu Seemai Farming Fed Farmer Producer Company Ltd.
The application emphasizes the unique agricultural and nutritional properties of this traditional red parboiled rice variety, primarily cultivated in the Ramanathapuram district.
If granted, the GI tag is anticipated to improve the market appeal of the rice, protect its identity, and enhance the livelihoods of local farmers.
Mugavai Kuliyadichan Sivappu Arisi is notable for its small, round grains, reddish color, and unique taste and aroma. It is rich in dietary fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants, making it highly valued for its health benefits.
Moreover, it is recognized for its resilience to drought and pests, establishing it as a sustainable option in the saline-prone and well-drained soils of Ramanathapuram.
According to S. Vincent, Member Secretary of TNSCST, the rice’s distinctive traits arise from the geographical and cultural context of the region.
“Local farmers have maintained the Kuliyadichan seeds through generations, mainly due to their adaptability to arid climates and saline soils,” he stated. “Its unique flavor, nutritional attributes, and agronomic benefits are unparalleled elsewhere.”
Scientific research and historical documentation back these assertions, showing that the rice’s micronutrient richness and adaptive resilience are intrinsically linked to its native setting.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a type of intellectual property protection awarded to products originating from a specific geographic area, possessing qualities, reputation, or characteristics directly connected to that location.
Administered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, GI tags aid in preserving traditional knowledge, preventing unauthorized usage, and enhancing product value in both domestic and international markets.
Tamil Nadu currently boasts several products with GI tags, including Kancheepuram Silk Sarees, Madurai Malli, and Thanjavur Dolls. The inclusion of Mugavai Kuliyadichan Sivappu Arisi in this roster would further highlight the state’s rich agricultural legacy and dedication to conserving indigenous crop varieties.
