New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes that India has a strong opportunity to emerge victorious in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy if they concentrate on the fundamentals and leverage the unique characteristics of the pitch at Old Trafford.
India enters this crucial match following a heartbreaking 22-run loss at Lord’s, which brought their England tour record to 1-2.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Panesar discussed how the pitch is expected to behave throughout the five days, suggesting there will be something for everyone.
“I genuinely believe that India has a fantastic chance to perform well in the upcoming Test match. The pitch will provide everything necessary, but it requires proper application. If they can achieve that, they stand a significant chance of winning,” Panesar informed IANS.
Out of the nine Test matches India has played at Old Trafford, England has secured victory in four, while five matches concluded in a draw. Their last visit to this venue occurred under Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2014, where they faced a defeat by an innings and 54 runs.
“It’s going to be a solid batting and bowling pitch, with spinners seeing some assistance later on. There will be ample opportunities for everyone. Poor bowling will be punished, and while batting, there will be pace and bounce; this will be the fastest pitch of the series so far. Bowlers will need to exert themselves to capture wickets, and batters must avoid taking loose shots,” he commented.
Panesar, who played 50 Test matches for England, is well-acquainted with Old Trafford, having recorded his best figures at this venue with 10-187 against the West Indies in 2017.
The 42-year-old shared the mindset that enabled him to excel on the grandest stages of his career. “While representing England, the key was the processes. I concentrated on my preparation and procedures, which helped me manage the pressure effectively. It would have been significantly more challenging had I focused solely on the outcome.
“It was demanding; we needed to be resilient and mentally robust. That is what is critical; everything else aligns afterward. Removing the significance from the equation allows you to perform at your best, especially when the stakes are elevated. I found joy in bowling against the world's finest batters,” Panesar concluded.
