Lusaka, Aug 1 (NationPress) The leaders of Zambia and Botswana on Friday reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the fraternal bonds that have historically connected these two southern African nations.
This commitment was made during bilateral discussions in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, between Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and his Botswanan counterpart Duma Gideon Boko, who is visiting Zambia for a two-day state visit.
Hichilema emphasized that the two nations have long enjoyed friendly and warm relations, which are grounded in shared history, language, and culture, fostering strong connections among their people.
The Zambian president also highlighted the necessity of boosting bilateral cooperation, especially in light of ongoing global trade disruptions. He advocated for enhanced trade and deeper collaboration in infrastructure projects, including road, rail, and air transport systems.
Additionally, he welcomed the recent upgrade of their bilateral framework from a Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation to a Bi-National Commission, describing this change as a crucial platform for strengthening ties and expanding cooperation with Botswana.
In response, Boko stated that his visit was focused on reaffirming the enduring relationship between the two nations, founded on a shared history and mutual goals, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
He praised the elevation of bilateral cooperation as a significant milestone reflecting the progress and evolution of their partnership.
"This change embodies our collective commitment to fostering high-level dialogue, overseeing the execution of bilateral agreements, and synchronizing our policies to enhance collaboration across various sectors," he stated.
The enhanced partnership represents a call to action, providing an opportunity to evaluate progress and address outstanding challenges, Boko added.
Last year, President Hichilema hosted his then-Botswana counterpart Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi during a working visit to Zambia. According to Zambia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, this visit was reciprocated following Hichilema's visit to Botswana in January 2024 at the invitation of Masisi. During their meeting in Livingstone, Hichilema and Masisi engaged in official discussions on critical matters of mutual interest.
