New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The landscape of apprenticeships in India is experiencing a notable evolution, with organizations increasingly adopting LGBTQIA+ inclusion as a fundamental workforce approach, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The report, produced by TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, reveals that 64% of employers are open to hiring LGBTQIA+ apprentices, marking a significant advancement in promoting diversity within the workplace.
While 24% of businesses remain neutral, a distinct transition is visible as prominent industries are taking proactive steps to advocate for inclusion.
"Apprenticeships have traditionally served as a bridge between education and employment, and their role in fostering diversity is more vital than ever. With 64% of employers showing readiness to welcome LGBTQIA+ apprentices, industries must leverage this momentum," stated Dr. Nipun Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship.
“Beyond recruitment, companies must cultivate work environments that promote belonging, psychological safety, and career growth for LGBTQIA+ talent. This initiative goes beyond mere representation; it ensures that every individual has equal opportunities to learn, develop, and make meaningful contributions to India's evolving workforce,” he added.
Industries exhibiting a strong willingness to engage LGBTQIA+ apprentices include the tourism and hospitality sector (72%), followed closely by the electronic systems and electricals sector and the telecommunications industry (71%).
These sectors are trailed by biotech, pharmaceutical, and life sciences industries, with 66% embracing inclusive hiring practices.
"The incorporation of LGBTQIA+ apprentices into India’s workforce signifies a progressive shift toward genuine inclusivity. Industries such as tourism, electronics, and telecom are setting the standard, demonstrating that diversity is not merely a corporate obligation but a driver of innovation, collaboration, and business success,” Sharma remarked.
He highlighted that emerging fields like Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and drone technology firms are also establishing new benchmarks, with 74% and 71% of employers prioritizing diverse hiring.
Moreover, the increasing presence of LGBTQIA+ apprentices in electric vehicle (EV) and mobility (38%) and semiconductor (56%) sectors underscores a growing industry-wide recognition of the strategic and economic benefits of an equitable workforce.
“As apprenticeships become a favored pathway for skill development, businesses must actively implement measures—through policy reforms, awareness initiatives, and mentorship programs—to ensure a fair and thriving workplace for everyone," Sharma concluded.
