New Delhi, Oct 3 (NationPress) In a remarkable demonstration of how technology can be lifesaving, an Apple Watch Ultra played a crucial role in rescuing a 26-year-old tech professional from Mumbai during a scuba diving incident near Puducherry.

The individual, Kshitij Zodape, who is employed at an e-commerce firm, encountered a serious situation while diving this summer when his gear malfunctioned beneath the surface, endangering his life.

Kshitij, an experienced diver since 2020, recounted that the diving conditions were challenging, with visibility ranging from only 5 to 10 meters.

While diving at a depth of about 36 meters in the Bay of Bengal, he suddenly found his weight belt coming loose.

This unexpected event caused him to ascend rapidly, a rise that could have proven fatal.

“I was around 36 meters down when I unexpectedly began to shoot up towards the surface,” he explained.

The Apple Watch Ultra on his wrist detected the abrupt ascent and immediately displayed warnings, advising him to slow down to prevent potential lung injuries due to the rapid rise.

Despite his efforts, Kshitij could not halt his uncontrollable ascent. The watch then activated its emergency siren.

The piercing siren, distinguishable from other underwater sounds, caught the attention of his diving instructor, who swiftly swam back to provide assistance.

At that point, Kshitij had already ascended approximately 10 meters but continued to rise due to the buoyancy created by the absent weight belt.

Thanks to the timely alert from the Apple Watch Ultra, a potentially life-threatening scenario was avoided.

Kshitij later expressed surprise at the watch's capabilities, stating, “I had no idea my watch had such a feature. When I ignored the warnings, it began to chime loudly. My instructor immediately heard it.”

Following the incident, Kshitij reached out to Apple CEO Tim Cook to share his experience. To his astonishment, Cook replied personally, saying, “I’m so glad your instructor heard the alarm and quickly assisted you. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Take care.”

The Apple Watch Ultra, launched in 2022 as a rugged and adventure-ready device, is equipped with numerous safety features, including the emergency siren.

This siren emits two alternating high-pitched sounds that can be detected from up to 180 meters away, specifically designed to penetrate environmental noise during emergencies.
