Nirmala Sitharaman Sets Bank Locker Insurance at 100x Annual Rent
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Monday that the standard insurance policy for individuals holding bank lockers is set at 100 times the annual rent of the locker, should any loss occur.
During a supplementary inquiry in the Lok Sabha amidst Question Hour, FM Sitharaman elucidated that banks are prohibited from inspecting or documenting the items stored in lockers, as this would contravene banking regulations.
"Due to this prohibition, providing insurance coverage based on the actual worth of the contents is not feasible," the Finance Minister remarked.
FM Sitharaman further articulated that any effort by banks to observe what clients keep in their lockers would constitute a violation of privacy and established guidelines.
The minister indicated that since banks lack the authority to assess locker contents, a standardized policy has been implemented.
"In this scenario, clients are eligible for compensation up to 100 times the annual locker rent in events of loss, such as theft or damage," FM Sitharaman explained.
She also noted that the idea of offering distinct or varied insurance coverage for individual lockers is impractical within the existing framework.
“Currently, there are no plans to alter this structure,” FM Sitharaman stated.
Earlier in the day, Parliament ratified the Finance Bill 2026, with the Rajya Sabha returning it to the Lok Sabha via a voice vote, thereby finalizing the legislative process to provide legal support for the Union Budget 2026-27 proposals, which will be effective from the new financial year starting April 1.
The Lok Sabha approved the bill on March 25, along with 32 amendments. The Rajya Sabha returned the bill after a brief exchange, including FM Sitharaman's responses to queries posed by Members of Parliament regarding her budget proposals.
