New Delhi, Sep 2 (NationPress) The Union Cabinet's recent approval for the expansion of NH-715 and the construction of an elevated corridor, amounting to Rs 6,957 crore in Assam, is set to facilitate safe wildlife transit and improve travel efficiency, while also promoting eco-tourism and creating job opportunities in the region, as stated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sonowal expressed gratitude to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for endorsing the enhancement and widening of the existing highway to a four-lane configuration for the Kaliabor–Numaligarh segment of NH-715, which includes ecological considerations along the stretch passing through Kaziranga National Park (KNP).
The initiative will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) format, covering a distance of 85.675 km at a capital expenditure of Rs 6,957 crore. This project features an ambitious 34 km elevated corridor in Kaziranga, designed to enhance traffic flow while safeguarding wildlife that is often at risk of accidents.
"Today marks a historic moment for Assam and a significant stride towards India's sustainable development. This initiative embodies the vision of our esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose dedication to the people of Assam and the pride of our state—Kaziranga National Park—is commendable," Sonowal remarked.
"The impressive 34.45 km elevated corridor will provide a seamless, secure, and uninterrupted route for wildlife between Kaziranga and Karbi Anglong Hills. It represents a commitment to preserving our natural heritage while paving the way for a brighter future for our citizens," he added.
Emphasizing the project's economic importance, the Union Minister stated that the new corridor will enhance connectivity and spur growth in the region.
"In conjunction with protecting Kaziranga, this highway will significantly reduce travel time, promote eco-tourism, facilitate pilgrim and visitor transit, and create new avenues for trade and industry. The 21 km of greenfield bypasses will alleviate congestion in Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat, ensuring a smoother and safer journey. This road will forge connections between emotions, aspirations, and prosperity," Sonowal asserted.
Moreover, the project is anticipated to yield 15.42 lakh person-days of direct employment and 19.19 lakh person-days of indirect employment, further advancing Assam's economic development.
The objective of the project includes constructing a 34.5 km elevated corridor, upgrading 30.22 km of current road, and developing 21 km of greenfield bypasses. These enhancements will relieve highway congestion, improve road safety, and ensure seamless connectivity to crucial nodes in Assam.
The alignment will connect with two significant National Highways (NH-127, NH-129) and one State Highway (SH-35), while also linking to three railway stations (Nagaon, Jakhalabandha, Vishwanath Chariali) and three airports (Tezpur, Lilabari, Jorhat). This connectivity is poised to enhance logistics, trade, and mobility throughout Assam.
