Seoul, Dec 28 (NationPress) The founder of the e-commerce powerhouse Coupang, Kim Bom-suk, issued a formal apology on Sunday regarding a significant data breach that impacted nearly two-thirds of South Korea's population.
"As the founder and chairman of the board, I deeply regret this incident on behalf of all Coupang employees," Kim stated in a written announcement, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
"I acknowledge the enormous frustration and disappointment caused by my lack of clear communication since the incident began. I genuinely apologize for my insufficient initial response and the communication gap," the statement continued.
Kim recognized that his apology was delayed, initially believing he should wait until all facts were confirmed, a decision he described as a “misjudgment.”
This apology comes roughly a month after personal data from about 34 million Coupang customers was compromised.
It was also revealed that Coupang identified the ex-employee responsible for the breach through forensic evidence, retrieved the hacking equipment, and secured a confession from the perpetrator.
Nonetheless, the government has labeled Coupang's findings as a “unilateral claim,” pointing out that a joint public-private investigation has yet to publish any results.
Kim sent another statement regarding his absence from a parliamentary hearing this week related to the data breach, citing a “prearranged schedule.”
His brother, Yoo Kim, who currently heads Coupang's global operational excellence, and Kang Han-seung, the former CEO of Coupang’s Korea unit, also submitted similar statements of non-attendance, according to Rep. Choi Min-hee of the ruling Democratic Party (DP).
Rep. Choi, who leads the parliamentary Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, criticized the Coupang founder for avoiding the hearing.
Previously, lawmakers threatened to file a complaint against Kim for his absence from the hearings.
