Coupang posts ₩715bn Q3 loss as Incheon warehouse fire costs bite
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Coupang, South Korea's dominant e-commerce platform listed on the US stock exchanges, swung to a net loss of ₩715.1 billion (approximately US$501 million) in the third quarter ended September 2026, reversing a net profit of ₩131.6 billion in the same period a year ago. The company attributed the sharp reversal primarily to costs stemming from a warehouse fire at its Incheon Fulfillment Centre, compounded by the lingering fallout from a large-scale data breach disclosed late last year.
The Incheon Fire and Its Financial Weight
A blaze at Coupang's Fulfillment Centre (FC) in Incheon, roughly 30 kilometres west of Seoul, broke out in July and significantly dented the company's quarterly earnings. Stripping out FC fire-related costs, Coupang's net loss narrows to ₩458.2 billion — still a substantial figure, but illustrating how central the fire damage was to the headline loss.
Notably, this was not Coupang's first such incident. The Incheon fire is considered the second-longest-lasting warehouse fire in South Korean history, following a 2021 blaze at a Coupang distribution centre in Icheon, approximately 50 km southeast of Seoul, which burned for around 130 hours. The recurrence raises questions about fire safety protocols across Coupang's fulfilment network.
Three Consecutive Quarters of Net Losses
The Q3 2026 result marks the third straight quarter in which Coupang has reported a net loss this year, underscoring the depth of the operational and reputational challenges the company is navigating simultaneously. Beyond the fire, the persistent drag from a data breach disclosed in November 2025 — which affected more than 37 million customers — continues to weigh on membership levels and margins.
Coupang founder and Chief Executive Kim Bom-suk acknowledged in an earnings conference call that 'a small group of members who left the platform following the data incident had yet to return, continuing to weigh on the business, although new members had helped make up for the decline in membership.'
Core Business Still Growing, CEO Signals Recovery
Despite the headline loss, Coupang's Product Commerce segment — its core online shopping business — posted an 8 percent year-on-year revenue increase to ₩11.95 trillion in the September quarter. The segment generates most of the company's revenue from South Korea.
Kim outlined three factors he characterised as temporary headwinds on Product Commerce margins: supply chain pressures, fixed-cost deleverage relative to pre-incident demand levels, and higher marketing investment aimed at winning back customers who departed after the data breach. 'Product Commerce is tracking toward the mid-next year recovery we laid out last quarter. We expect the reported growth and margins to approximate historical levels as we lap the affected periods (driven by the data incident) next year,' Kim said.
He emphasised that these factors were 'not structural' and that margins were expected to return to pre-incident levels.
What to Watch
All eyes will be on whether Coupang can demonstrate a return to profitability by mid-2027 as Kim has projected, particularly as it works through fire-related remediation costs and attempts to rebuild trust after the data breach. The company's ability to retain and re-attract customers — and whether its fulfilment infrastructure investments deliver margin improvement — will be the key indicators in coming quarters.
