C.R. Patil: Semiconductor Facilities to Minimize Import Dependence and Generate Employment for Indian Youth

Surat, Dec 15 (NationPress) With a legacy in textiles, diamonds, and solar panels, Surat is poised to expand its industrial portfolio to include the semiconductor sector, according to Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil on Sunday.
This announcement was made during the inauguration of the Suchi Semicon, a Gujarat-based semiconductor company’s inaugural Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) plant in Surat.
"India is currently on a transformative journey to establish itself as a global technology hub, and ventures like the Suchi Semicon OSAT plant are pivotal in achieving this goal," Patil expressed to IANS.
“With the government prioritizing the enhancement of semiconductor manufacturing in India, such facilities will be instrumental in decreasing import reliance, generating employment opportunities, and fortifying our domestic industry.
"I commend the Suchi Semicon team for their foresight and hard work in realizing this vision, which contributes significantly to the growth of both Gujarat and India as frontrunners in technology and innovation," the Union Minister remarked.
The establishment of the OSAT facility marks a crucial advancement in boosting India’s semiconductor production capabilities.
Spanning an initial area of 30,000 square feet, the plant will deliver vital assembly, testing, and packaging services for semiconductor components, benefitting sectors like automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial applications.
Ashok Mehta, Chairman of Suchi Semicon, stated to IANS: "The vision set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is for the nation to attain self-reliance in all sectors. In alignment with this vision, I have initiated this project, which has now reached the production stage. This initiative will generate numerous direct and indirect job opportunities."
He added that currently, they are sourcing raw materials from Japan, but plans are underway to produce them domestically in the future.
"We aim to start with 300,000 chips daily. Our ambition extends beyond mere chip manufacturing; we aim to foster innovation within the Indian semiconductor ecosystem. This facility will enable us to minimize supply chain delays, reduce logistical expenses, and promote the growth of a self-sustaining semiconductor industry in India," Mehta further elaborated.
Suchi Semicon proudly presented its semiconductor chip, branded "Made in India," emphasizing its role in promoting India’s self-sufficiency in semiconductor production. With an investment of $100 million, the plant is projected to manufacture up to 3 million semiconductor chips daily once it reaches full operational capacity.
As per Suchi Semicon, "The company is also in advanced negotiations to secure a strategic technology partner, which will further bolster its capabilities and drive innovation. Designed for rapid scalability, this facility is set to fulfill the rising demand for semiconductors in both domestic and international markets, positioning India as an important player in the global semiconductor landscape."
