Addis Ababa, July 27 (NationPress) The African Union (AU) has expressed its approval of France's declaration to formally acknowledge the State of Palestine, calling it a major milestone that is in line with the AU's enduring stance.
In a statement released on Saturday, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that the announcement made by French President Emmanuel Macron, regarding his plans to recognize the State of Palestine, aligns with the long-standing position of the African Union.
Youssouf noted that this position was recently reaffirmed during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
He emphasized that the summit, which convened African heads of state and government at the AU's headquarters in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa in February, reiterated Africa's unified commitment to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, which includes their right to self-determination and statehood.
The chairperson of the continental bloc, comprising 55 members, characterized France's declaration as a significant step toward achieving a fair, enduring, and comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on international law and pertinent United Nations resolutions.
Youssouf also reaffirmed the AU’s steadfast support for the two-state solution, envisioning Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully and securely. He further urged other nations to follow France's example in endorsing the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.
On Thursday, Macron announced that France would officially recognize the State of Palestine during the forthcoming 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September.
