Jammu, Nov 6 (NationPress) A direct train service linking Jammu and Srinagar is anticipated to commence by the end of this year, as all operational and redevelopment efforts in the Jammu division are set to conclude prior to November 30, according to Indian Railway officials.
The introduction of this direct train will represent a significant achievement in enhancing rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of India.
Currently, the Vande Bharat train runs between Katra, located in the Reasi district, and Kashmir.
The Northern Railways has expedited the operational and redevelopment tasks in the Jammu division to facilitate this direct service, a move that will be a landmark in J&K’s railway connectivity.
Officials from Northern Railway indicated that the direct train is likely to operate from Jammu railway station to Srinagar shortly. “Efforts are ongoing to make this direct service feasible. Recent flash floods had delayed our progress and shifted our timelines, but we are now pushing the project forward vigorously,” they stated.
They also mentioned that the primary challenges are concentrated on the Jammu-Katra segment, where the construction of bridges, tracks, and station upgrades is underway.
“At Jammu station, there are two main types of work: civil structure and track-related. The track work is nearing completion, while civil structures, including new platforms and station amenities, are also close to finishing. We are closely monitoring the progress to ensure Jammu-Srinagar connectivity is established as soon as possible,” an official elaborated.
All operational and redevelopment tasks are expected to wrap up by the end of November, after which a decision regarding the start of the direct train service from Jammu to Srinagar will be made.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is regarded as the most challenging railway project ever undertaken by Indian Railways. This ambitious project traverses the Himalayas and features engineering wonders like the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge over the Anji Khad.
This line is now fully operational, offering all-weather connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth in the area.
The dream of a train to Kashmir, more than a century old, was realized when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar on June 6.
