New Delhi, March 31 (NationPress) The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, effective since August 2023, highlights the increasing significance of data resilience and the government's pledge to bolster data security frameworks, industry experts stated on Monday in observance of World Backup Day 2025.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has reported losses of Rs 11,333 crore due to cyber fraud within the first nine months of 2024.

“This serves as a wake-up call for enterprises to move beyond traditional data backup practices and embrace a holistic data resilience approach. World Backup Day acts as a crucial reminder in this regard,” noted Sandeep Bhambure, Vice President and Managing Director, India and SAARC, Veeam Software.

The DPDP regulatory framework will assist Indian enterprises in aligning with international standards and ensuring business continuity, he added.

Approximately 30 percent of Indians perform daily data backups, which is the highest globally, surpassing major economies like the US (27 percent) and the UK (23 percent).

A survey conducted by Western Digital reveals that external hard drives are a favored backup option in India, with 54 percent of respondents employing them for data backup, making India the second highest worldwide in this category, just behind France at 59 percent.

Parag Khurana, Country Manager, India at Barracuda Networks, remarked that World Backup Day serves as an annual reminder of the necessity to back up and safeguard data against loss and theft.

“The universal advice of making regular backups and maintaining offline copies is more critical than ever. However, in India’s rapidly evolving digital environment, there are additional facets of effective backup worth contemplating on World Backup Day. These may not be immediately apparent but are equally essential,” Khurana pointed out.

As AI adoption expands across sectors, businesses are increasingly dependent on data for AI-driven decision-making and model training.

“This ongoing technological progress means organizations are producing and storing more data than ever, necessitating proactive data management, starting with data minimization,” stated Greg Clark, Director of Product Management, Data Security, OpenText Cybersecurity.

“Nevertheless, organizations must be cautious about the data they back up. Not all data is essential; 33 percent is identified as redundant, obsolete, or trivial (ROT). By pinpointing and discarding unnecessary data and phasing out outdated applications, businesses can significantly shrink their attack surface and enhance their security posture,” Clark advised.
