Ericsson Secures Multi-Billion Dollar 4G and 5G Contract from Bharti Airtel for Indian Market

New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) The telecommunications leader Ericsson announced on Wednesday that it has been granted a multi-billion dollar extension contract for 4G and 5G services by Bharti Airtel to enhance its operations in India.

This long-term agreement for 4G and 5G RAN products and solutions includes the deployment of centralized RAN and Open RAN-compliant solutions aimed at transforming the network, which will provide users with broader coverage and improved network capacity.

Additionally, Ericsson will upgrade the software of its currently deployed 4G radios, thereby enhancing the overall customer experience, as stated in a press release.

“This rollout will allow us to further enhance the speed, reliability, and coverage of our network, delivering an outstanding experience for our customers,” commented Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel.

As a global frontrunner in 5G, Ericsson currently facilitates 170 operational 5G networks across over 70 nations. The company has been a reliable connectivity ally for Airtel for more than 25 years, aiding every mobile communication generation.

Andres Vicente, Head of Ericsson for South-east Asia, Oceania, and India, remarked that this partnership extension signifies their collective vision to construct a robust 4G and 5G infrastructure for Bharti Airtel to meet the connectivity demands of its clientele, including emerging 5G use cases. “We will collaborate closely with Bharti Airtel to provide exceptional user experiences for their customers,” he added.

This collaboration also highlights the mutual commitment of Ericsson and Airtel to foster a sophisticated digital ecosystem in India.

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility report, it is anticipated that 5G subscriptions in India will soar to approximately 970 million by the close of 2030, representing 74 percent of mobile subscriptions.

By the end of this year, 5G subscriptions are expected to exceed 270 million, accounting for 23 percent of total mobile subscriptions in the region. The report further noted that India leads the world in average monthly usage per smartphone, currently at 32 GB, projected to rise to 66 GB by 2030.

India has executed extensive mid-band deployments and is on track to achieve around 95 percent population coverage by the end of 2024.
