New Delhi, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Government-e-Marketplace (GeM) has successfully recorded transactions amounting to Rs 5.4 lakh crore in gross merchandise value (GMV) during the fiscal year 2024–25, as announced by the Commerce Ministry on Friday, coinciding with GeM's 9th Foundation Day.
In its journey spanning nine years, GeM has made significant strides, integrating 1.5 lakh women-led businesses along with startups, self-help groups (SHGs), artisans, and micro & small enterprises (MSEs).
“We are committed to ensuring that every entity, from tribal artisans to tech-savvy startups, can seamlessly tap into public procurement opportunities,” stated Mihir Kumar, the Chief Executive Officer of GeM.
The platform has adopted technology-enhanced procurement processes for quicker and more cost-efficient transactions. It has expanded its offerings into new service areas including insurance, manpower, and Mine Development and Operations (MDOs), and has provided training and onboarding assistance to state governments, public sector undertakings, and local bodies.
Established in 2016 with the objective of fostering transparent, inclusive, and efficient public procurement in alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance,” GeM has evolved into a digital procurement system, linking sellers and service providers nationwide, including women entrepreneurs, startups, micro & small enterprises (MSEs), artisans, SHGs, and Divyangjans.
This year's Foundation Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Ease, Access and Inclusion’.
Major reforms introduced include the removal of caution money for sellers, the rationalization of vendor assessment fees, and a decrease in transaction charges, which will exempt 97 percent of orders. These initiatives aim to enhance the accessibility and fairness of public procurement.
To commemorate the occasion, a GeM Seller Samvad was held on August 6, 2025, at the GeM office in New Delhi, uniting participants from various sectors.
GeM employs AI-driven tools and a multilingual Learning Management System (LMS) to improve access to public procurement. Features like voice-enabled navigation and region-specific training modules assist in onboarding and transactions for sellers, particularly those located in remote and underserved regions.
