Seoul, March 30 (NationPress) The count of individuals utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) services in South Korea has nearly doubled compared to the previous year in 2024, according to data released by the government on Sunday.
A survey on internet usage executed by the Ministry of Science and ICT revealed that the percentage of participants who engaged with generative AI services soared to 33.3 percent last year, up from 17.6 percent a year earlier.
This indicates that 1 in 3 internet users in the country have interacted with generative AI services, including ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI based in the U.S., as reported by YOnhap news agency.
Roughly 82 percent of users sought generative AI services for information research, while 44 percent utilized these services for help with paperwork and 40 percent for translating foreign languages, according to the survey.
Approximately 98 percent of users acknowledged using instant messaging platforms, with KakaoTalk being the predominant choice among them.
More than 95 percent of users reported engaging with the online video platform YouTube.
Moreover, overseas direct purchases by online shopping consumers surged to 34 percent last year from 20 percent the previous year, driven by the entry of Chinese e-commerce platforms like AliExpress and Temu into the South Korean market.
The survey included 60,229 family members from 25,509 households across the nation, according to the ministry.
In a related report, IDC mentioned this week that 70 percent of organizations in the Asia/Pacific region anticipate agentic AI to transform business models within the upcoming 18 months.
Businesses in the area are aiming to enhance operational efficiencies, boost customer engagement, and improve decision-making through the adoption of agentic AI.
“Agentic AI workflows provide a more sophisticated approach to incorporating and integrating GenAI into business operations. Nonetheless, recognizing the significance of security and trust during the implementation of these systems is vital,” stated Deepika Giri, head of research, Big Data and AI, IDC Asia/Pacific.
