New Delhi, March 12 (NationPress) The Indian government has allocated Rs 793.27 crore in incentives to 29 companies under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme focused on millet-based products. This initiative aims to enhance value addition and boost the integration of millets into food offerings, as disclosed in Parliament on Thursday.
In a written statement to the Lok Sabha, Ravneet Singh, the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, revealed that these incentives are part of the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), which specifically includes a segment for millet-based products with a total budget of Rs 800 crore.
Among the approved entities, eight are large corporations while the remaining 21 are classified as small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The ministry is actively promoting the enhancement of food processing infrastructure, including millet processing facilities, through various initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), PLISFPI, and the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PMFME).
As part of the PMFME scheme, millet-based products have been designated as 'One District One Product' (ODOP) in 21 districts nationwide.
By December 31, 2025, a total of 4,612 micro food processing units engaged in millet processing have received approval under the scheme, with subsidies totaling Rs 91.20 crore.
Additionally, the government organized Millet Mahotsav events in 30 districts across various states and Union Territories during the International Year of Millets 2023 to bolster support for entrepreneurs and startups in the millet processing sector.
Under the millet-based products component of the PLI scheme, the sales figures for approved beneficiaries surged from Rs 35 crore in 2020–21 to Rs 814 crore by 2024–25. The procurement of millet rose significantly from 1,092 metric tonnes to 16,130 metric tonnes during the same timeframe.
Furthermore, one food processing unit has received approval under the creation/expansion of Food Processing and Preservation Capacities (CEFPPC) component of PMKSY.
The government also extends branding and marketing support through the PMFME scheme to farmer producer organizations, self-help groups, and cooperatives involved in millet processing, as noted by the minister.
