New Delhi, Sep 14 (NationPress) The Income Tax Department has officially dismissed rumors that suggested the tax return filing deadline has been postponed to September 30.
In a statement on X, the I-T Department clarified, “There is false information circulating that the due date for filing ITRs, originally due on 31.07.2025 and extended to 15.09.2025, has been further postponed to 30.09.2025.”
“The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025. Taxpayers are encouraged to depend solely on official updates from @IncomeTaxIndia,” the Department added.
To assist taxpayers with ITR filings, tax payments, and other related services, “our help desk operates 24/7, offering support via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and Twitter/X,” it noted.
Back in May, the I-T Department announced an extension for ITR filing for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 (for income earned in the financial year 2024-25) for individuals, HUFs, and entities not requiring an audit, moving the deadline from July 31 to September 15.
As of now, over six crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for AY 2025-26.
The Department shared this milestone on X, expressing gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for their contributions.
“Thank you to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us achieve the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) so far, and the count continues,” stated Income Tax India.
The Department urged those yet to file their returns to act promptly to avoid a last-minute rush.
“We encourage anyone who hasn't filed ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so as soon as possible to prevent a last-minute rush. Let’s maintain this momentum!” the I-T Department emphasized.
The steady increase in ITR filings over the years reflects both rising compliance and the widening of India’s tax base.
During this filing season, the Income Tax Department has also introduced new online tools.
