Incredible Transformation of Indian Railways Over the Past Decade: Insights from Erik Solheim

New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) Erik Solheim, the ex-Minister of Climate and Environment from Norway, remarked on Monday that it has been truly remarkable to witness the progress of Indian Railways over the last decade, driven by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has laid the groundwork for numerous projects, thereby enhancing the nation's railway infrastructure.
In an interview with IANS, Solheim stated that Indian Railways is consistently improving its operations, effectively connecting millions in remote areas and evolving into a modern transportation system for the 21st century.
"Rail travel is the safest, most people-centered, and environment-friendly method of moving individuals, and it is encouraging to see Indian Railways making significant strides under a proactive government," Solheim emphasized.
He also mentioned that old stations and platforms are undergoing upgrades while new stations are being built rapidly.
“For instance, the Cuttack railway station in Odisha resembles one of the most modern airports globally,” he pointed out.
High-speed trains such as Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat have set new standards for Indian Railways.
On the same day, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several railway projects via video conferencing.
Among the notable initiatives, PM Modi inaugurated the new Jammu Railway Division, a significant move towards improved connectivity in the region. He also inaugurated the Charlapalli New Terminal Station in Telangana and laid the foundation stone for the Rayagada Railway Division Building under the East Coast Railway.
"This is a remarkable accomplishment. The metro network in India has now surpassed 1,000 kilometres," PM Modi stated.
According to Solheim, Vande Bharat trains are delivering high-quality transport between major cities at speeds reaching up to 180 kilometres per hour.
“It is anticipated to soon achieve speeds of 200 km per hour. By 2026, the new bullet train connecting Ahmedabad and Mumbai is expected to be operational, with stations in Surat, Vadodara, and other locations,” the esteemed diplomat informed IANS.
