How Much Renewable Energy Capacity Has India Added in 2025?

Synopsis

India's renewable energy sector is making significant strides, adding 30 GW of capacity this year. With projections of reaching 43 GW by 2025, the country is on track to meet its ambitious 2030 goal of 500 GW. This article explores the latest developments and future plans in India's clean energy landscape.

Key Takeaways

  • India has added 30 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2025.
  • Expectations of reaching 43 GW by year-end.
  • Current renewable energy capacity stands at 226 GW.
  • Government plans to tackle delays and improve efficiency.
  • Aiming for 500 GW by 2030.

New Delhi, Sep 4 (NationPress) India has successfully increased its renewable energy generation capacity by 30 gigawatts (GW) this year, with projections indicating a potential total increase of up to 43 GW by the end of 2025, as stated by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi.

During an event, Joshi revealed that approximately 22 GW of solar and wind power was installed between January and June, bringing the current total to around 30 GW.

“We are hopeful of achieving between 39 GW and 43 GW of new capacity by the close of this calendar year,” he remarked.

The government remains confident in reaching its ambitious objective of 500 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2030, given that India presently holds 226 GW of renewable energy capacity.

The minister highlighted that 67.08 GW of projects have been tendered, with a total of 186.3 GW of projects currently under implementation.

“When combined with existing operational capacity, this approaches nearly 499 GW,” he added.

The government is actively addressing delays in signing power sale agreements (PSAs) and improving weather forecasting systems to bolster sector efficiency.

Additionally, the Power Ministry has devised a detailed transmission plan aimed at integrating 500 GW of capacity by 2030, placing special emphasis on states rich in renewable energy resources, Joshi reported.

To expedite India's transition to clean energy, the minister also unveiled plans for the second phase of the PM-KUSUM scheme and the third phase of the Green Energy Corridor project.

According to a report by HSBC, India's power sector witnessed heightened capacity commissioning in July, driven by robust policy incentives, adding 2 GW of conventional and 3.2 GW of renewable capacity.

This addition has raised year-to-date (YTD) totals for FY 26 to 21 GW.

The research suggests that in FY26, 11.7 GW of thermal power, 3.8 GW of hydropower, and 36 GW of solar power are set to come online. Overall power demand saw a 4.4 percent year-on-year increase in August, following a rise of more than 2 percent in July.

Point of View

I stand firmly with the nation's commitment to advancing renewable energy. The recent increase in capacity is a testament to India’s resolve to lead in sustainable practices, ensuring a greener future for generations to come.
