India PE/VC investments surge 46% to $17.1 billion in Q3 2026: EY-IVCA
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Private equity and venture capital (PE/VC) investments in India jumped 46 per cent year-on-year to $17.1 billion across 348 deals in Q3 2026, powered by a sharp rise in infrastructure and healthcare transactions, according to a report released on Friday, 30 October 2026. The data, published by EY-IVCA, signals a robust return of institutional capital to Indian markets after a subdued preceding quarter.
Quarter-on-Quarter Rebound
Investment value surged 124 per cent from the previous quarter's $7.6 billion, underscoring the scale of the recovery. Deal volume, however, tells a more nuanced story: at 348 transactions, it was 9 per cent lower than the 384 deals recorded in Q3 2025, though it was 44 per cent higher quarter-on-quarter. The divergence — higher value, lower deal count year-on-year — suggests investors are writing larger cheques into fewer, higher-conviction bets.
September Becomes the Strongest Month of 2026
September 2026 emerged as the standout month of the year so far, drawing $7 billion in investments — the highest single-month figure since May 2024. The late-quarter concentration points to a pipeline of deals that had been building through the slower summer months, finally closing as valuations and macroeconomic signals aligned.
Infrastructure, Healthcare and Real Estate Lead
Infrastructure was the top-performing sector, attracting $7.2 billion — nearly 42 per cent of total PE/VC inflows. Healthcare ranked second at $3.1 billion, followed by real estate at $1.4 billion. Together, these three sectors accounted for 69 per cent of overall PE/VC investment during the quarter, reflecting a decisive tilt toward hard assets and defensible sectors amid global uncertainty.
Buyouts Dominate; Start-Ups Maintain Momentum
By deal type, buyout investments led with $5.1 billion deployed — a staggering 419 per cent increase in value compared to Q3 2025. Start-up investments ranked second at $4.8 billion, up 55 per cent from $3.1 billion in the year-ago quarter. The buyout surge reflects growing appetite among global private equity firms to acquire controlling stakes in mature Indian businesses rather than take minority growth positions.
IPO Pipeline and Investor Outlook
The EY-IVCA report also highlighted the evolution of India's PE/VC-backed initial public offering market: a total of 290 PE/VC-backed IPOs have been recorded since 2016, with nearly 75 per cent — or 217 IPOs — occurring in the last five years. This acceleration reflects deepening domestic capital markets and a maturing exit ecosystem for institutional investors.
On the macroeconomic front, the report noted that Indian capital markets have 'largely consolidated over the past few weeks,' with the upcoming quarterly earnings season being closely watched 'given prevailing inflationary pressures.' It added that a recent repo rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) 'reflects a proactive approach as high crude oil prices persist.' Looking ahead, the report forecast PE/VC investors to 'remain cautious and selective' and to 'prioritise resilience of future profitability and return on capital.' The pace of dealmaking in Q4 2026 will be a key indicator of whether the Q3 momentum is sustained or tapers under macro headwinds.
