Government Projections Met
The Power Ministry had projected peak electricity demand would touch 270 GW during the summer of 2026 — a target the grid effectively met on 21 May. For context, the highest demand recorded last summer was 242.77 GW in June 2025, which had itself fallen short of the government's estimated peak requirement of 277 GW for that season.
IMD Forecasts Prolonged Heat
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected a harsh summer this year, signalling that electricity usage is likely to stay elevated as consumers continue relying heavily on air conditioners, desert coolers, and other cooling equipment. Industry experts expect both power demand and consumption to remain high in the coming weeks, supported by above-normal temperature forecasts.

The sustained surge reflects mounting pressure on India's power infrastructure as extreme weather events grow more frequent and intense.
