New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) India is reinforcing its stature in the global maritime domain by promoting sustainable, safe, secure, and smart shipping, thereby enhancing the growth of the worldwide maritime ecosystem, as stated by the government.
The nation has been re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, under Category B, which includes 10 nations most invested in global seaborne trade. The IMO Council comprises 40 elected members across three categories, acting as the executive arm of the IMO between Assembly sessions.
India received the utmost votes in this category, tallying 154 out of 169 valid votes during the elections held at the 34th Session of the IMO Assembly.
“This is a moment of pride for India’s maritime industry! The country has been re-elected to the IMO Council for the 2026–27 biennium, boasting the highest number of votes in the category focused on international seaborne trade,” expressed Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
This decisive mandate underscores the global community’s confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a secure, safe, and environmentally friendly maritime domain, he added.
The government noted that India’s leading vote count signifies the strong trust the international community places in India’s constructive leadership in global shipping.
“It also validates the achievements of India’s maritime growth agenda under the Prime Minister’s vision. This result further confirms the Government of India’s ongoing reforms and proactive initiatives to enhance the maritime sector,” the official statement indicated.
This accomplishment follows the successful hosting of ‘India Maritime Week 2025’, which saw participation from over 100 nations.
