New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday celebrated India's rich maritime legacy and its significant contributions on National Maritime Day, reiterating the government's dedication to fortifying this vital sector.
National Maritime Day is observed every year on April 5 to mark the inaugural journey of the first Indian-owned vessel, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919.
Established in 1964, this day recognizes the maritime industry's pivotal influence on India's economy, bolstering international trade and acknowledging the hard work of seafarers.
In a post on X, PM Modi remarked, "On National Maritime Day, we honor India's maritime legacy and the essential contributions of everyone involved in this field. Their commitment enhances our economy, trade, and connectivity."
"We will persist in utilizing the vast potential of our maritime sector to ensure a prosperous future," he asserted.
The Prime Minister also released a video message, stating, "In the 21st century, India's maritime sector is advancing swiftly. We have updated antiquated colonial shipping regulations with modern laws that empower state maritime boards, enhance safety and sustainability, and digitize port management."
He noted that under the 'Maritime India' vision, over 150 initiatives are underway, resulting in a doubling of major port capacity, reduced turnaround times, and a surge in cruise tourism.
Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to X, expressing, "Best wishes to the professionals of India's maritime sector on National Maritime Day."
"Your expertise and bravery have been essential in propelling the nation's development, in both peaceful and challenging times. The nation honors your dedication," he added.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also remarked on X, "Throughout history, India has maintained a magnificent tradition of connecting with the world through maritime routes. On National Maritime Day, I commend our brave and adventurous seafarers while emphasizing the sector's significance to our economic growth."
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also extended its greetings on National Maritime Day.
"On the 63rd National Maritime Day, MoPSW acknowledges the resilience and service of our seafarers navigating difficult conditions in West Asia. Their contributions keep India progressing, and we are committed to ensuring their welfare at all times," the Ministry stated.
