India Q3 2026 deals: 696 transactions worth $36.9 billion signal broader market
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Institutional deal activity in India widened its base in Q3 2026, with 696 transactions worth $36.9 billion recorded across mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and public markets, according to a report released on Thursday, 8 October 2026 by Grant Thornton Bharat. The quarter was marked by stronger private equity participation, record IPO fundraising, and a surge in inbound investment — together signalling what analysts describe as a more diversified deal landscape.
M&A and PE: Volume Up, Values Softer
Stripping out initial public offerings and qualified institutional placements, 608 M&A and PE transactions were recorded worth $23.1 billion. Deal volumes rose 8 per cent quarter-on-quarter, even as values declined 36 per cent — a divergence that reflects a shift toward mid-market and sector-diversified activity rather than headline mega-deals.
M&A activity alone accounted for 255 transactions worth $13.2 billion. Volumes grew 7 per cent quarter-on-quarter, while values fell 53 per cent from Q2 2026's elevated base of $27.9 billion. The quarter saw five billion-dollar transactions totalling $7.9 billion, with the single largest deal valued at $1.9 billion — well below Q2's comparable figure of $11.8 billion.
Inbound Investment at Eight-Year High
One of the standout developments of the quarter was a sharp uptick in inbound deal activity, which hit its highest quarterly volumes in eight years. Deal value from inbound transactions jumped 2.6 times quarter-on-quarter to $4.2 billion, underscoring growing foreign interest in Indian assets. Outbound activity, by contrast, moderated from its elevated Q2 base, with values declining 74 per cent to $6.1 billion.
Record IPO Fundraising and Robust QIP Activity
Public market activity was a clear highlight. 60 IPOs raised $9 billion in Q3 2026 — the highest-ever quarterly IPO fundraising on record. Alongside, 28 qualified institutional placements (QIPs) raised an additional $4.8 billion, reinforcing depth across primary market channels.
Sectors Leading the Deal Table
Energy and Natural Resources emerged as the largest sector by deal value for the first time in 2026, recording 38 deals worth $3 billion. Infrastructure Management followed with 26 deals worth $2.8 billion, with volumes rising 30 per cent quarter-on-quarter. The Retail and Consumer sector retained its position as the most active by deal volume, logging 113 deals worth $948 million.
What Industry Is Saying
Shanthi Vijetha, Partner, Growth, Grant Thornton Bharat, said: 'The breadth of activity across these channels reflects continued investor confidence in India and the depth of opportunities available across sectors.' The remarks point to a deal environment where participation — not just headline value — is broadening, a trend that analysts say is more structurally durable than value-led surges concentrated in one or two mega-transactions.
With inbound volumes at multi-year highs and the IPO pipeline remaining robust heading into Q4, India's deal market appears positioned for sustained, if not spectacular, momentum through the end of 2026.
