New Delhi, July 9 (NationPress) India’s fish production has more than doubled from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to a remarkable 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25, demonstrating the success of the nation’s ‘blue revolution’ initiated by the government, as stated in an official announcement made ahead of the National Fish Farmers Day.
The inland fisheries and aquaculture sectors have shown an impressive 140 per cent increase over the past 11 years, highlighting the potential of India’s water resources and the government’s committed efforts, the statement revealed.
In another noteworthy achievement, seafood exports have surged past Rs 60,500 crore, solidifying India’s position as a leader in shrimp exports. Shrimp production has escalated by 270 per cent over the last decade, creating numerous job opportunities and empowering the fishing community across the nation.
The government has consistently championed the transformation of the fisheries sector, investing a total of Rs 38,572 crore since 2015.
The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D), is set to commemorate 'National Fish Farmers Day 2025' at the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar on July 10. The event will be attended by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, along with Ministers of State Professor S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian.
During the celebrations, the Union Minister will unveil several crucial fisheries initiatives, including the announcement of new Fisheries Clusters, the release of the ICAR Training Calendar, and the introduction of guidelines for seed certification and hatchery operations, aimed at enhancing quality, standardization, and capacity building within the fisheries sector.
Additionally, the Union Minister will honor various fisheries beneficiaries, including traditional fishers, cooperatives/FFPOs, KCC cardholders, and promising fisheries startups.
