Gandhinagar, Feb 9 (NationPress) The employability rate of graduates in India has surged from 33.95% in 2013 to 54.81% in 2024, primarily due to a series of skill enhancement programs implemented by the government, as stated by Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
During his address at the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Youth Summit, Mandaviya emphasized India’s dedication to youth empowerment, pointing to initiatives such as the Skill India Mission, the National Education Policy 2020, and the PM Internship Scheme, which have successfully trained over 15 million young individuals in areas like AI, robotics, and digital technologies.
BIMSTEC comprises India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The summit's goal is to enhance collaboration, share experiences, and expedite development led by the youth, which is essential for empowering the next generation across the region.
Mandaviya also highlighted that India’s startup environment is burgeoning, now recognized as the third-largest globally, boasting over 157,000 startups, with nearly half being women-led. He encouraged BIMSTEC countries to join forces in establishing a cohesive regional startup network to stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship.
He pointed out the vast potential of the youth in the region, who represent over 60% of BIMSTEC’s 1.8 billion population, emphasizing the critical need for skill development and job opportunities in a rapidly changing global environment.
Mandaviya proposed that BIMSTEC function as a “Youth Bridge,” a comprehensive initiative aimed at empowering young leaders through knowledge sharing, leadership training, and regional networking. This initiative strives to create a transformative platform that blends entrepreneurship, sports, academia, and technology.
The Union minister underlined the significant influence young leaders will have in cultivating a resilient, flourishing, and interconnected BIMSTEC community.
The summit also included a panel discussion on “Celebrating Diversity across BIMSTEC Countries,” which explored the significance of cultural inclusivity, mutual cooperation, and shared heritage in reinforcing regional connections. This was followed by a session on ‘Digital Infrastructure for Inclusive Economic Growth and Sustainability’.
