New Delhi, May 26 (NationPress) The scope of inland water transport is projected to experience a substantial expansion, increasing from 11 states in FY2024 to 23 states and 4 Union Territories by FY2027, according to the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, during a recent announcement.
To facilitate this expansion, initiatives amounting to Rs 1,400 crore were either launched or announced during the meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) held on January 10.
During a Consultative Committee meeting on Inland Waterways Transport in Mumbai, it was disclosed that efforts are underway to operationalize 76 waterways by 2027, with the projected cargo volume anticipated to rise by 156 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by the conclusion of FY 2026.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the principal agency under the Ministry, provided an extensive overview of significant projects, future projections, and a strategic roadmap moving forward.
Additionally, the IWAI is conducting a longitudinal survey of 10,000 km each month to evaluate the Least Available Depth (LAD) to enhance navigability. Cargo volume is expected to grow incrementally to 156 MTPA by March 2026, moving closer to the ‘Maritime India Vision 2030’ goal of 200 MTPA.
“Inland waterways are proving to be a pivotal moment in India’s logistics and transport landscape. Under the transformative guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are observing a significant shift with policy initiatives such as the National Waterways Act, 2016, the Inland Vessels Act, 2021, and various programs like the Jal Marg Vikas Project, Arth Ganga, Jalvahak scheme, Jal Samriddhi scheme, Jalyan, and Navic, among others,” stated Sonowal.
Through the ‘Maritime India Vision 2030’ and the ‘Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047’, these frameworks represent not just policy documents, but are essential drivers propelling India toward becoming a global maritime powerhouse.
Major initiatives for Inland Waterways are underway in the northeast, with a Rs 5,000 crore roadmap planned for the next five years.
“In accordance with the ‘Harit Nauka Guidelines’, the Inland Waterways Authority is devoted to eco-friendly and sustainable transport solutions, including the acquisition of electric catamarans and hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessels,” remarked the minister.
