New Delhi, Oct 28 (NationPress) The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced on Tuesday that this year’s agricultural output is poised for an increase due to the expanded area dedicated to key kharif crops, propelled by improved monsoon conditions.
The total area sown with paddy has reached 441.58 lakh hectares, surpassing last year's figures. Meanwhile, the land allocated for oilseeds has hit 190.13 lakh hectares, with soybean and groundnut leading the way. Pulses have been planted over 120.41 lakh hectares, an essential move towards ensuring nutritional security, while the sugarcane cultivation area is recorded at 59.07 lakh hectares, directly benefiting sugarcane farmers, as noted by the minister during a weekly agriculture sector review meeting.
Minister Chouhan pointed out that most significant reservoirs are at normal or above-normal levels, fulfilling irrigation requirements and allowing for timely kharif crop sowing. The persistent soil moisture has supported crop development and is anticipated to aid in the expansion of rabi sowing areas.
Moreover, it was reported that harvesting of kharif crops has commenced in various areas, covering approximately 27 percent of the total kharif area thus far, while early-stage rabi sowing has also begun. The condition of onion, potato, and tomato crops nationwide is satisfactory, and the current stocks of rice and wheat are above the buffer norms.
The minister also emphasized that the Cabinet's sanctioning of a Rs 38,000 crore fertilizer subsidy, announced on Tuesday, will significantly contribute to enhancing farm production.
Agriculture Commissioner P.K. Singh presented a report showing improved water availability for irrigation projects and reservoirs, which has been pivotal for agricultural growth in irrigated regions. The total live storage across 161 reservoirs in the country is 165.58 billion cubic metres (BCM), which is 104.30 percent of last year's level and 115.95 percent of the ten-year average.
Chouhan also affirmed that the Central government, in collaboration with state governments, will extend all the necessary support to promote increased sowing and achieve record productivity of pulses and oilseeds in the forthcoming rabi season.
