New Delhi, Aug 6 (NationPress) - RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra shared on Wednesday that numerous accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana are due for re-KYC (Know Your Customer) updates, marking a decade of the government's pioneering financial inclusion initiative.
As a result, public sector banks are setting up camps for re-KYC of Jan Dhan accountholders at the panchayat level from July 1 through September 30, according to Malhotra's remarks during the MPC speech.
"These camps are being organized at the Panchayat level to deliver services directly to customers. In addition to facilitating new account openings and re-KYC processes, the camps will also promote micro insurance and pension schemes aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and resolving customer grievances," stated the Governor.
The re-KYC process is straightforward, allowing individuals to update their personal and address information to ensure their details are accurate with the bank.
Additionally, the RBI has introduced a policy for resolving claims related to bank accounts and items held in safe custody or safe deposit lockers belonging to deceased customers, streamlining the settlement process.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) serves as a governmental financial inclusion initiative designed to ensure access to essential financial services, including basic savings and deposit accounts, remittances, credit, insurance, and pensions at affordable rates.
Individuals without any other accounts can open a basic savings bank deposit (BSBD) account at any bank branch or through a Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) outlet.
Accountholders under PMJDY receive a RuPay debit card, which also provides an accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) India stated, "The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has revolutionized access to financial services for the underprivileged, bridging the divide between banks and the unbanked population, and promoting dignity, self-reliance, and economic inclusion."
To date, over 55.90 crore accounts have been established under PMJDY. Furthermore, the government has undertaken numerous initiatives to further financial inclusion and ensure access to basic banking services.
In this context, 53.85 crore loans totaling over ₹35.13 lakh crore have been approved under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY).
The PMMY offers collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh to micro and small enterprises, fostering self-employment and income generation.
The camps at the panchayat level are also facilitating registrations for several key schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Atal Pension Yojana.
